Mines If You Want To Siege The Hive

lets live a bit longer guys
ok i found that out yesterday and i have to post it just cause its really good. i played 3vs3 yesterday and i was comm. so i sent my rines to get some restowers, secured the first hive, etc.

i went for the second hive after some minutes but it was their mainhive so it was kind of protected through OCs. Now my plan was to siege it (how creative *g*)
but before my marines where sent to the hive I gave each of them a pack of mines. here comes the interesting stuff guys so listen up: they planted their mines between the hive and the TF. one of them built it and the other one guarded. Now the guarding one hadn´t to empty one clip cause 2 skulks and 1 lerk were killed by the mines. by that time the TF was allready up and 2 Turrets protected it. PG was also there. hive went down some 2-3 mins later. none of the two rines died while they built/sieged the hive.

Yeah thats it. Im sure you know about the use of mines but I never used them while I planned to siege a hive. Its just a thread for all comms out there. well for those who never tried this tactic before. Of course I don´t know how it would work against more aliens but i guess they will run into the mines too *g*...

oh and i hope noone posted this before... if someone did...sorry

Mines are more valuable in small games than large ones, however early game as long as you place them well in large games you get the res back. Mines are a good defense but you are more than likely only gonna get skulks with them so if they have any higher lifeforms they arent going to help as much.

yeah thats right... so perhaps you should siege the main hive soon and put mines around your tf. but that would really influence the whole tactic too much.

question: i saw skulks jumping (not the leap ability) over the mines without exploding... bug? or should this happen? i found out that another row of mines imidiately stops them...but should they be able to jump over the first row? cause that kind of suxx. whats about mines at the wall?

yeah, good idea. thanks for posting

the good solid ideas alwaysneed to be repostes, as ppl forget, or ppl don't particularly like to look at post archives for more ideas.

anyhoo, yeah, they can jump over them, yes, a mine on the wall will kill a skulk wall climbing on it (assuming no cara).

I hand out a lot of mines when i comm 3.0 because currently how they work should make them a really dominant early game weapon; the only problem is few people know how to use them properly. Half the time I see someone waste all 5 mines in an obvious spot all next to each other. The trick is to spread them out all over the map in rediculously random but well trafficked spots =).

Mines are awesome. I almost always get mines in combat maps, I never comm in classic and I don't tell the comm what to do unlike 99% of marines out there. I encourage people to get mines on combat as first upgrade, instead of weapons. On 10vs10 combat, mines first, means lots of dead skulks and very big mine fields. It is also best to use them in offensive manner, meaning place them outside of your base. They also help to prevent ebil focus spawn camping.

I miss the old mines...now they've been nerfed. For only 4 mines per 10 res that 2.5 res a mine. On average even if you kill a skulk per mine you won't earnt he res back. Plus they only have 20 hp now and can be EASILY parasited, spit to death. I miss the days when mines could only be killed with acid rocket and bile bomb

AFAIK parasites don't hurt mines (counted as "structures" , parasites does organic damage)

And using spit on mines isn't that easy considering the low gorge eye height.

But indeed , they don't give enough RFKs to pay for themselves now. Their advantages (deterant , blindspot cover , instant defenses) compensate for that ; they're the most cost effective defense for anything , even RTs (8 mines around the RT and it isn't going to be destroyed anytime soon)

Comms should drop mines more often , but they need to trust their soldiers to do so. A reliable ninja can get a PG inside the hive and mine it , allowing the rest of the team to rush the hive without being instantly killed on the PG.

As for the offensive mining , it's a good idea to place mines ontop of ladders or inside vents. If used on a large scale , they can keep a large chunk of the alien team in the respawn queue... spawnkilling with mines is lame , but clever mine placement can "persuade" skulks to blow themselves up (try mining the subspace vent over and over when sieging)

uh-, a bit of a question. In combat, you only get one mine per spawn right?
  • BugBrainBugBrain Join Date: 2003-05-14 Member: 16279Members
Yes, you only get one mine per life in CO, so make good use of it . I sometimes go pure support rine (mines, mt, scan, hand nade, welder) and mines are useful in hallways when you have a tight group of rines and charging skulks/fades. Also, for those hit and run fades that like to blink around rine start, place your mine at it's likely exit. You just might kill it.

another use for mines: i guess many people allready know but i will write it one more time for everyone who doesnt know. place one single mine about 30-50 centimetres away, behind the RTs. this will cause that skulks who try to hide from marines while biting th RT will explode. works vey well for me. try it

Encourage the buying of mines in combat. If your like me and die alot, get mines at first point, and just make a mine field somewhere. I thought it dumb at first to only have one mine, but after I started getting them I released I ended up placeing ALOT of mines. Now if lots of marines did that....

I really ought to try this out! Lot's of the time when I siege I just drop 3 turrets with the tf but really thats 30 res I could spend on mines, 3x4, 12 mines. But, I think it would only work if the marines knew HOW to place the mines and what not...so it goes back to how much faith you put into your rines
  • CheeseCheese Lork on the Clorf Join Date: 2003-12-15 Member: 24396Members, Constellation
hmm normally i give them one to two packs of mines. but i still build the turrets. These mines are just to cover the building marines till the turrets are finished.

I dont think a 3v3 game proves anything really...
  • CheeseCheese Lork on the Clorf Join Date: 2003-12-15 Member: 24396Members, Constellation
hmm yeah thats true...i agree but... try it.
go comm at a server and try it.
And tell me how it worked and if it worked. That would help everyone. I just tried it at a 3vs3 game. But perhaps i try it next time...

done that tactic 2day but i alrdy new it , commed on ns_eclipse , secured rts grabbed maint then pushed onto computer core it and mined it too

Mines DO have their uses, and, In actuallity, I wish commanders would drop more when there are resources aplenty.

Just placing them randomly in hallways, esspecially in seige maps, just kills the oni with carpace and etc. I put them in vents and all over dark rooms, because they cant see em, they cant jump over them.
Nice things to have, just litter the map with em, but not in the open places where spit and bile can get to em.

    Cheers
    Pascal
