Hi developers. Can you give as any info what kind of map enviroment can we expect next? At least a small hint :-)

And please please let it be something similar to Ns_Bast - everyones favorite map ;-)

I do especially miss this...

If I remember right it's going to be a lab environment

Hopefully not something like ns_bast, if only because brighter assets are needed, there are dozens of ns_rockdown-clones floating about in the mapping-section. It's starting to get despressing over there.

UWE has expressed interest in the concept, if I recall correctly.

Once the infestation reaches the Command Chair, the process begins. One Gorge enters the chair to provide the necessary height. Another climbs on its shoulders to access the controls.

A Gorge Lab is quickly established, staffed by microscopic Gorges who work tirelessly to unlock the secrets of Frontiersman Technology, stopping only to change their lab coats when they become dirtied. Once the research progresses to a certain point, the Gorgecom gives the order. Nanites are called into service.

The armature forms. A chosen Gorge, tested many times in the field of battle, enters the machine.

Servos whir; miniguns spin up in diagnostics; an Exogorge is born.

I was thinking about what a Kharaa based map would look like... Most of the maps are based on Kharaa invading Marine/human territory...so what if the Marines made a push into Kharaa territory? What would the/a Kharaa homeworld look like? I know it's unlikely because of the sheer amount of brand new assets that would have to be made for such a different environment, but I can dream. :P

since bast was kinda based on the nostromo from alien, there has to be a homage for another , very nice 70´s scifi film called silent running.
the movie featured a massive freighter called "valley forge" (the same name as the decommissioned aircraft carrier they used to film all the spaceship interior scenes), carrying the last remaining plants and wild animals from earth in massive biosphere domes featuring different climates. forrest dome, desert dome, a agricultural dome, very distinctive environments, combined with the cold, sterile innards of the ship when you leave these domes.

cargo storage... we need cargo back..

    some real life biodome

maybe combine this with the gritty, "almost" sterile look of the sarang station from the movie "moon"

There was actually an NS1 map with a 'biodome' hive site but I can't for the life of me remember what it was called.

I like to think that's what the story behind ns_mineshaft is.

The NS1 map ns_origin had the Bio-Dome hive location. There could be some really cool micro-climate spaces made using Spark's technology. I'm so excited to see transparency introduced.

Most likely the next map after all the Refinery themed ones will be Discovery, which is set in a very clean lab environment. Something along the lines of the cleanroom type labs in the first level of Deus Ex 3. Work has already begun on it, but it isn't scheduled for 1.0 release.

After that, the next big environment will be Biodome. We already have a fair bit of concept art for it, and even a few art assets. Nothing is set in stone yet, as this is post-1.0, but the likelihood is that there will be more than one Biodome map; like Refinery, looking at different areas and themes within the one environment.

This is the kind of thing that goes on behind close doors on normal game releases, where they are optimizing it right up until the end. You guys are just getting to play with a version of the game that normally only the developers see.

    i like =]

a lab environment map could be pretty cool too! certainly a change from what we currently have now

not sure if this has been asked, but will there ever be a remake of ns1 maps? i personally loved veil but i guess different game means we cant have same maps

original bast was a quite sexy map btw, all these hidey spots and vents and locked off corridors only accessible through vents..elevators... omg rotating door gank , and these very distinctive map locations, kinda felt like they all serve a purpose.

i really hope that discovery makes it in for 1.0, all the variety you can fit will help.

I for one am bored of the current dark moody look we got going and the game isn't even out yet, it doesn't help that we've only had a handful of maps to play though, i think something like the planned biodome theme would be a huge improvement, as long as it's well lit of course, they've already shown they can make some nice looking organic models, id hope they've already got people working on this otherwise it will be a long time before we see anything.

You'll be seeing more variety with the unreleased maps when they are brought into the public build. We've started playtesting them in earnest so things are moving forward nicely at the moment.

Some progress has been made on the Biodome theme, mostly on the concept art side. We'd love to get cracking on it, but resources being tight and time being linear, we need to get the current set of maps ready for release first.

Thank you, Insane, for your insights in the development. I remember Cory stated most of this some time ago. I'm really looking forward to biodome. It's great you guys already have some maps in development for post-1.0, because from my experience I can tell that updates with new maps are the ones that make us players the happiest :)
Personally I would love to see an old base on a forest/jungle planet that has been taken over by plants and decay.

Biodome or forest would be a really good addition to the game!
