I haven't played in a while. But I did play starting the day AFTER release. (Halloween party kept me away from release night.)

The best part for me was how terrified everyone was of onos.

And of course, having a dedicated gorge was a huge difference from later versions.

LOL, oh gawd the spaze cow was terrifying in early versions. So were the lorks on the clorfs with their spikes and whatnot.

I'm not sure if I started playing on the 31st or Nov 1st. Anyway, my favorite part of the early days had to be the jetpacks that hovared without flapping. It was so easy to rock the entire server when you never had to touch the ground.

If you waited behind doors as a Skulk in Eclipse and chomped on Marine legs when they opened, continue to post here.

    P.S. Bring back doors.

I tried to think of something good about the early versions, but I couldn't.
  • DelphicDelphic Join Date: 2006-11-02 Member: 58262Members
The best thing about the early versions was the fear! People were kinda scared of all the aliens and if they saw an onos they just turned and ran, hahaha!

+1 to standing just behind the doors.

    Unwarranted criticism.

I sincerely feel that proximity mines with infrared trip beams make my life complete.

I miss the awesomeness of being Permagorge and also the first to go onos and rampage the marines.
  • tjosantjosan Join Date: 2003-05-16 Member: 16374Members, Constellation
Can you still blow up mines by shooting them and deal damage that way? I remember stacking 5-6 mines and setting them all off with my pistol. Mh, fun.

An AI controlled 'skulk' that gorge could spawn at the 3 hive situation in 1.X versions. The babblers did a bit of bite damage and then blew up with a mini xeno.

The AI was stupid as it gets, the spawning method was bugged and all in all it was weird as it gets. Then again gorges, weird stuff and nostalgia get along well.

I think with FF 1 you can. I remember a clanmate running out of ammo on a PG and killing the last skulk by knifing a nearby mine. That was on 3.1 I think.

I sorta miss the perma-gorge but we will get the Acommander now, filling a similar role. Lerkspikes should never have gone, merely switched slot, imo.

Babblers (as they were), good riddance. I´d like to see them working, though. Sorta.

A bit worried about the lack of chambers for the gorge but I trust Flayra so...

Aliens could kill marines with mines by aciding/xenoing the items. You could relocate to the thruster room on bast (right outside feedwater) with a phasegate. Aliens could use them though, so you had to recycle them. Man, if there's one thing I miss from 1.04, it's relocating through walls.

Also, 70 skulk armor with carapace, GO!

You can still do that on some maps. We were able to do it on ns_lost just the other night.

I was playing a small game last night and watched an onos stand directly on the phasegate to get a marine and thought to myself "No, idiot! You're going to get telefragged!" Old habits die hard.

Heh, I've got so used to landing on a PG from the ceiling and biting it from the mine free middle that I hardly even remember the telefrag era. Aliens using PGs was an awesome chaos factor though.

Yea, you can still build a pg through the marine start big fakedoor wall on bast to sneak into engine hive, bypassing main aft. That's not that much of an advantage though, because the PG is still pretty far from the hive.

First time I played ns I could use pgs as an alien, no idea what build that was
