I really loved hearing about the stuff that I had to go through too and do. By the way, the tower must be constructed! It has been surrounded by scaffolding for about two years now. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" /> (seriously though, do as you like, it's a DF fortress)

I'll look forward to seeing if the drink shortage will claim any victims.

Actually, when I first saw the fortress, I was turned off by its layout. I like my fortresses to have nice organized layout. But the mess is turning out very... yes.

Say, where's the lever to the low entrance bridge? Assuming there is one.

Oh yeah, that was one of mine. I put it at the top of the stairs leading to the lower entrance several floors up. When a marauding horde of goblins are charging towards an entrance, you want want the switch to be well inside of said entrance. I once had an ambush where the dwarf given the task of pulling the level of doom got scared and ran away from the approaching goblins ONE square away from being close enough to pull the lever. Argh.

Abrah, are you aware that your rooms are really weirdly shaped and have their value reduced an awful lot since they intersect?

Just how much obsidian is there on the map? Also, why use stonefall traps? Weapon/Cage traps > *

Stonefall traps are quick to set up and do heavy damage, and are therefore perfect for early fort defense. But yes, they should be replaced by more advanced traps once the resources are available.

Stonefall traps are lazy way to set up and do light damage, and therefore need to be avoided in favor of superior defense mechanisms.

If there is obsidian on the map, all you need is a good miner and a craftsdwarf workshop.

You mean obsidian swords? Those require a log of wood too, don't they?

Not light damage, heavy damage. A stonefall trap kills most of the stuff that walks under it.

Compare that to a stacked weapon trap with a bunch of spiked balls.

Also, is wood really a problem on that map? If so then that sky bridge better be finished by my turn!

A stonefall trap will do perfectly adequate damage early on. It'll kill wildlife and goblin poachers with ease. That's all you need for the first year or two.

I'm glad you've noticed the level of planning that went into the water tower Align. One thing I'm worried about: when you started that gear work, did you cut away some wall or open some new channels? I worry because the pumps hold water on one end but not the other, so if you cut things open, it might lose its water tight state. When I'm ruler again, I'll set up some water return ports (to maintain the upper level while the system is under stress) and new overflow-proof drain ports.

Yes indeed, I am the engineering ruler of this here fort.

I have had my moments of engineering masterwork. Like, remember the time I pumped magma 4 floors down the mountainside?

    seriously though, get pumping <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

I did your thing for a while, it overflowed and posed a danger, so I stopped it. If I simply let it go the stuff would eventually harden. So I made a magma grid extending 6 levels down with full length channels. Much safer, much more effective, much more useful <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

    <img src="http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f318/qtransport/Timber6openingthenewmagmachannels.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

3 grids like this exist on every other level across those 6 levels.

The day the word "danger" makes it into my dictionary, is the day the workplace related deaths exceeds the "workplace related death-to-oh my, maga is being pumped, awesome!"-ratio.

The water already pumped up by the pumps didn't move though, so it wouldn't have caused a problem with the pumps anyway, but dwarves would use the door by the pumps as a shortcut so I'm leaving the wall there.

Faskalia, I strongly suggest making another burial area during your turn. After all the deaths that align had, I'm pretty sure the new section I made is near full. With the bad feelings all these deaths and injuries are making, we don't want to add to them by making them endure the decay of friends.

edit: I'm really glad my water tower worked out!

I made another smallish tomb (19 coffins), so that'll at least provide a buffer until more can be made.

If I ever join something like this again, I'll save up comments and thoughts until they reach critical mass(1 year) rather than this diary-style. Didn't really work so well. But I won't be signing up for another round soon, too much on my plate.

    Save uploaded.

    Random thing I just noticed:

If you look at the nearest goblin civilisation from the civilisation screen, instead of imports and exports to them being listed in terms of value, your exports from them are "Terror" and imports are "Vengeance".

You guys should engineer a steam room. I think it could be possible with two levels of magma and water pumped on top... That way the magma below would reheat the magma when it turns to obsidian... Then just make a room with gratings above this contraption... and set it as a meeting room?
