3.0.5 Hitbox Bug Theory - Spectators

ultranewbultranewb Pro Bug Hunter Join Date: 2004-07-21 Member: 30026Members
I've a theory that when you spectate a player, this somehow interferes with the new hitbox code.

If spectator is like commander mode, a comm is really just an invisible, invulnerable player flying thru the air. The bug where a comm looses his armor goes to prove this (not detailed due to exploit).

So, the hitbox of the spectator entity may be blocking the line of sight. That is, the code might be missing one of the arguements for LoS detection that has it ignore specific players or items [via one of the numberous "Trace" methods in the HL-SDK].

I've not quite got a repro yet, but it appears you must join marines first and then spectate. More details after more testing ....

The spectator entity shouldn't have a hitbox. However, I wouldn't be suprised if it does, because the spectator mode in NS is nasty and weird-ified.

However, for the theory to work the way you suppose it does, there's only one way I can think of. The spectator hitbox would have to be larger then the player hitbox in one or two dimensions, and then somebody would have to be spectating in first-person mode. Otherwise, it would be third-person mode spectating and it would only "block" shots on the backside, and I know that I've seen reports that involve different angles.

Just an observation, there have been many, MANY reports of this weird hitbox bug. I somehow doubt that all of them happened during times when people were spectating, but anything can happen.

*EDIT* By the way, I think I remember reading somewhere that command mode is, indeed, a really hacked-up spectator mode.

I'm in agreement with Semi on this one, that our beloved game's spectator mode is a bit messed up, but that could be Valve's fault? As well as our HLTV, which I've heard is another Valve fix.

This sounds like something that belongs in the bug report thread, but this obviously needs more testing.

I just tested this on 2 rounds on the NS Vet server and if I joined marines and then spectated, whoever I spectated had no hit registration. The attacked alien would confirm "zero hits".

I'm 98% sure this is the repro needed.

    Hmm, very interesting.
I think I'll try it for myself.
I would advise others to try and reproduce this on their system if possible.

Looking back, I dont know how this could be possible. Teppla or jmmsbnd (good lord, those two will find this thread and flame me to death) can sometimes empty a server. It's very fun, infact I do it sometimes with my clanmates. But when they do, do that.. tons of people spec them, so I dont know how they could do anything with half the server speccing them.

good find to say the least... not that I think it dismisses those hitreg vids, what is the chance a marine was specing every one of those players? Although I have experianced hit reg that bad on many other servers even 3.04...

server has to be 3.0.5 for this to happen, i've seen it too.

go spec a guy shooting a hive, note that his bullets will no longer hit said hive.

Also remember that you spectate your team when your dead, so this might also have the same or a similar effect as being in perma-spectator mode.

Ultra found something alright. If yu ever get the chance, join a 3.0.5 server, join marines then f4 and join specs. Spec the team leader or any competent marine and watch how he has no hit registration on targets that are even standing still.

I was being spec at least 1 of the times I have encountered this bug. Dead marines would also explain why it would randomly appear and disappear.

Huh. Now that's interesting. Can anyone confirm that this is in fact consistent?

has anyone tested it with aliens, perhaps using onos, fade, etc models?

I play on nsarmslabs servers all the time. I've always had good registration with the nsa servers until the recent release were it seems I've encountered more hit registration problems in the last week, then ever before. I'm with kalimxs on it being a 3.0.5 bug. I wonder if HLTV would have any affect on the this bug to, that would be a mess if so =(

it would be funny if it blocked EVERY player from getting reg though

I've spent the last hour testing this out on 3.04 and 3.05 servers. For every 3.04 server, I really dont notice a difference, nothing starts to happen.

But amazingly, on 3.05 servers.. People couldn't get any kills when I specced them. I specced a player name "irosefromthedead" and he was doing well, getting about 3 kills for every death. I was sorry to ruin his game, but he just kinda stopped killing.

    ROFL

Thats pretty damn funny, but its good to know we can give the coders some direction as to where to take this... <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Just an update.
I just got out of Bry's NS server, apparently he knows about the bug but will not change his server.

I specced someone named mag and someone named The Baron (sorry if you're reading.) And if PluQ is reading, you can testify to this: The Baron had 0 hit registration on a hive and I dont think the alien indicator was blinking because the aliens didnt know about it for a while.

Mag got killed about 3 times while I specced him, no kills, and considering he was at the top of a losing team with 19-15, I found that suprising.

0 Hit reg on each marine. I dont know about aliens yet.

To add to the further conformation of this bug, yes when you spec a player from spec mode they will have huge reg problems. The shotgun fails to reg at all, the lmg regs somewhat but it's really poor, same with the HMG. The GL and knife were working as normal.

Now does this bug happen from ingame spec mode, like when you are respawning...?

I dont see why it wouldnt, people dying is alot more common then having people in the spec spot, so we know that just random people in Spectator mode (who joined specs through RR) cant be causing all of the hitreg probs.
