The definitive tutorial.
Okay, assuming you are reading this, you are having major problems with installing Steam or Natural-Selection. While this might be for some reason that is completely obvious for everyone but you, or something that is actually a problem and needs serious consideration, here is my step by step "tutorial" if you will to install Steam and Natural-Selection.

1. Getting Half-Life:
*IF YOU ALREADY OWN HALF-LIFE 1 OR THE EQUIVALENT, SKIP THIS SECTION.
Natural Selection is a modification of the Half-Life engine, therefore you must have the Half-life engine present to play Natural Selection.
1.1 In a Store
This is easy. Go to your local computer software retailer and you should be able to buy it for about $10 or $15. Do not ever buy a key from someone or steal a key, as it will most likely always be in use.
Here is a picture of the box.
You can also get some of these other games and use their keys:
Half-Life (Collectors Edition/Platinum Pack)
Day of Defeat
You are not done. You only have the CD key now. Skip to section 2.
1.2 Over Steam
*THIS SECTION REQUIRES STEAM. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE STEAM, LOOK AT SECTION 2.
*IF YOU HAVE STEAM BUT DO NOT HAVE AN ACCOUNT, LOOK AT SECTION 3.
*THIS SECTION REQUIRES THAT YOU HAVE A VALID CREDIT CARD TO PURCHASE HALF-LIFE 2 GOLD/SILVER OVER STEAM (Visa, MasterCard, Discover, Amex, JCB)
*IF YOU ALREADY HAVE A HALF-LIFE 1 KEY, SKIP THIS SECTION.
Load up Steam. Note that sometimes it is in the system tray.
Double click the icon in your system tray to bring up the main steam menu.
Click the button that says Browse Games.
A window will pop up with three tabs available, Package Offer, Individual Games, and Third-party games. If you would like to play Natural-Selection, and don't want to buy Half-Life 1 in the store or do not own a Half-Life key or the equivalent, you must buy Half-Life 2 Gold (U$85) OR Silver (U$59) Edition so you could receive Valve'sBack Catalog
If you choose to continue to purchase Half-Life 2 Gold/Silver, then click the Purchase this Package button.
This window will appear. Read the Steam Subscriber Agreement and if you agree, check the box stating so and click next.
This window will appear. Ready one of your credit cards and put in the information on it. Do not use a name from one card and a number from another. Use only a Visa, MasterCard, Discover, Amex, or JCB credit card. Steam only accepts these types, and NO OTHER. When you are done with this window, click next.
Select the card type from which you got your name from. Enter the credit card number and expiration date. Double-check to make sure all the information is correct. After you are done with that window, click next.
After that, you will be prompted with confirmations and the such. This is a secure transaction.
2. Downloading and Installing Steam
*IF YOU ALREADY HAVE STEAM, SKIP THIS SECTION.
Steam Website: www.SteamPowered.com
Direct Steam Download: Direct Download from www.SteamPowered.com
When you click the download link, select "Save" and save it to your disk where you will remember it (Your desktop, for example.)
Double-Click "SteamInstall.exe" or whatever you saved it as and follow the on-screen instructions.
3. Running Steam for the First Time
*IF YOU ALREADY HAVE A STEAM ACCOUNT, SKIP THIS SECTION.
*THIS TUTORIAL DOES NOT TAKE LOADING OR UPDATING TIMES INTO ACCOUNT.
Double-Click the Steam icon from your Quick-Launch bar, Start>All Programs Menu, or your Desktop. You will be presented with this window.
Now, since this is the first time you will be running Steam, You most likely don't have an account. So click Create a new account.
Another window will pop up with information. After reading it, click next.
This window will appear. Input an account name you would like to have. Don't expect common names to be available; don’t be afraid to use numbers. Also make sure you type in the password the same in both boxes.
Click next when you are done with that window.
When this windows shows up, put in your REAL e-Mail and confirm it. Click next to continue.
Select from this window a secret question you will always be able to remember, and no one else will be able to answer. There are choices for what question you want asked. This is for password recovery, in case you forget your password Steam will e-mail it to you. Click next to continue.
Your account information will be displayed here. I suggest printing it out by clicking the Click here to print this page now link. Make sure to put it somewhere safe where no one else can find it (a safe, sock drawer, behind that loose tile in the bathroom?...)
After that, click next. You will be reminded that steam stays in the system tray, next to your system clock. Click finish.
4. Registering your Half-Life 1 key with Steam
*IF YOU ALREADY PURCHASED HALF-LIFE 2 GOLD OR SILVER EDITION, SKIP THIS SECTION.
*IF YOU ALREADY HAVE HALF-LIFE AS A PLAYABLE GAME IN YOUR PLAY GAMES MENU IN STEAM, SKIP THIS SECTION.
Start up Steam if it is not already running. Remember, it might already be in the System Tray.
Get to the Steam Main menu by Double-Clicking the Steam Icon in the System Tray.
From here, click Browse Games.
From here, click Register product I already own...
This window will pop up; type in your CD key for Half-Life 1 or its equivalent. Click next when you are done. Try again if it fails, and if you are sure you entered your key right and it still fails, you need a new key.
Half-Life should now be available in your Play Games menu.
To access your Play Games menu, click the button from the Steam main menu that says Play Games, or right click the Steam icon in the system tray and click Play Games.
5. Installing and Running Natural-Selection
Load Half-Life 1 at least once. This can be done by first opening your Play Games menu, and double-clicking Half-Life. Select New Game when Half-Life loads, and select the training course. If it successfully loads, you most likely will be able to run Natural-Selection. Close the game once you are able to move. (Press the Escape [esc] key to get to the in-game menu, click quit)Download the Natural Selection Client here.
Make sure it's the client and not the server. Click a mirror below where it says 3.0 client, and your download should start the same way the Steam client download started. It's 139 megabytes, so download it when you are taking a jog or eating a healthy snack or something.
When you have Natural-Selection downloaded, turn Steam off. (By right-clicking its icon in the system tray and clicking exit)
Double-click the Natural-Selection installer. Follow the on screen instructions. Make sure the installer correctly targets your Steam accounts directory. When it is done installing restart your computer and open steam back up (note it might start up automatically and be in your system tray.) Open Steams main menu and from there open the play games menu. Under third-party games, you should see Natural Selection. Double click it to load up the game.
To start playing, I might first suggest that you fix your settings to look like this. If you are on anything slower than cable/DSL, you should turn the ping filter off.
6. NS Without Half-Life (CS:CZ REQUIRED)
Assuming you are reading this section, You do not own the origional Half-Life. But this does not mean you have to live without Natural-Selection... That is, if you do own Counter-Strike: Condition Zero. This mini-tutorial will show you what to do to trick steam into playing Natural-Selection for you.
1. Broswe to your account directory. (i.e. C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\email@example.com)
2. Find the folder called Condition Zero. Copy it. So, now your account directory has "Condition Zero" and "Copy of Condition Zero."
3. Rename "Copy of Condition Zero" to "half-life" exactly as I have it written.
4. Double click your new half-life folder, and delet the "cstrike" and the "czero" folders.
5. Install NS here, like you would normally (Section 5 covers that.)
6. Open up your Play Games menu. Right-click on Condition Zero, and click "Creae desktop shortcut." Press OK when it notifies you that it made a shortcut to CS:CZ on your desktop.
7. Right-Click the new shortcut on your desktop, and click properties. Now, replace the text in the "Target" text box with this text:
|"C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe" -applaunch 70 -game "ns"|
Make sure that it will target your Steam.exe (it differs for computers.) When you are done, click OK.
From now on, whenever you want to play Natural-Selection, click on the icon on your desktop, and it should work.
7. Some useful tweaks
Tweaks can make the difference between life or death in Natural Selection, and getting the most out of your computer is a must to be on the upper-most hemisphere of the score chart. Some of these tweaks will help you very much on your road owning!
First off... How to open your console.(Click here to see what the console looks like.)
Accessing the Console: Whenever Natural Selection, or ANY Half-Life mod is on your screen, press the Tilde key (~
) and it will pop up. Also, accessing the console in overbright maps will dim them a bit.
If you have cable/DSL:
-fps_max 100 - Allows your PC to always try to refresh your screen at 100 FPS max.
-gl_texturemode gl_linear_mipmap_linear - makes textures look a lot better.(Click here to see the difference in gl_texturemode settings.)
-net_graph 1 - Net graph and FPS counter. Never leave home without it.(Click here to see the net graph.)
-hud_fastswitch 1 - Automatically switches to the next weapon when you press a number/use the mouse wheel instead of having you confirm the switch with another click.
-m_filter 0 - Disables mouse smothing, so you can whip around and not worry about your mouse missing a few pixels. If you have a very sucky optical mouse, you might want to try ro enable it.
Impulses are essentially commands in the console that do actions. Knowing impulses allows you to make some pretty useful binds and scripts, so read on. To learn how to open your console up to bind these, look at section 6.
Bind Impulses to Keys
For example, Type this into the console to bing key P for the Flashlight toggle.
bind p "impluse 100"
If you want to put a message with the binding, use a semicolon, as so.
