Yes Virginia. It IS possible to survive after the third hive. I kid you not.
You see for most public servers the third hive means this:
Alien1: Now we donce! ololol
Marine1: ****! They got 3 hives!
Commander panics and throws whatever is available on the floor
Aliens gas, and bile bomb the marine base
Marines cower in every available hiding spot and begain to ask for jetpacks so they can hide in the vent and prolong the game...just 'cuz.
Alien2: w00t going Onos guys!
Marine2: OMG ONOS IN BASE!
The spores are flying, babblers munching, onos bounding away and the fades dropping their bombs. What to do?
Well last night this exact scene popped up. We had HMG's and Heavy armor, and our men were paniking and cowering and the aliens were trying to get past the Turrets and the Marines. I and my real life brother next to me get heavy armor, HMG's, and full ammo. Intent on the destruction of a hive. We decide on nameless and we're off (unfortunatly not enough time to get a welder). Along our way to nameless hive we encounter 3 skulks, that go down in seconds to our HMGs, before they can Xenocide. Fair enough. We get to the room that has the two red hallways and encounter a few offence chambers. Careful not to give away our positions we sneak past them and bolt for the protection of one of the red hallways. Much to our surprise there was almost no defenses at the hive itself. A few offense chambers here and there at the main enterance, but since we were at the other end we were safe.
So we began to shoot. 2 clips later and many comical noises from the hive it finally roars and goes under. Our only opposition was the industrious little gorge, who was quickly dispatched once as a gorge, and twice when he came back. I have about 100 bullets left and my brother about 67. So now what? I ask for ammo. 5 minutes later i have 50 extra bullets which are gone soon after i take out the offense chambers. (still no fades or onos attacking us yet) I'm screaming at the commander over the mic to drop me: A comm chair and a phase. We could still win. We had 400 resources. His responce:
"Whats a phase gate"
I slap my hand against my forehead and my brother does about the same. We try and walk him through the process and about 5 minutes later the farthest i've gotten is an additional 15 health from a medpack he dropped me. However then came a fade who finished off my already weakened brother so i had to hide in the corner and asked the commander to watch over me every now and again and give me health and ammo. Neither of this came because he was too intent on keeping the area right outside the base secure. Fair enough, but it couldn't be that hard to do both. I'm not an expert commander, but i have done it a few times and even won once. It is not difficult to be able to keep watch over two battle groups. The fade mentioned earlier would come in, hit me with an acid rocket or two and run away to the defense chambers. Not much but it eventually added up on me and killed me. Soon after the hive was up again and the marines lost.
Why did i post this?
Because i want to say that after the third hive the game is NOT over
so do NOT cower in a corner. It is difficult however it can be done. I've seen it once before and we almost got it that time with TWO people.
Then again maybe i was a bit to hard on the commander, after all what should have i expected from the guy that builds the arms and prototype lab outside the safety of the base anyway?
