Cleanup radiation contamination

A (mid-late game) gameplay component could be to clean up radiation contamination from the ship. It could be that the radiation is beginning to have a negative effect on the habits and even personalities of the animal and plant life.

Over time, this effect gets worse (as radiation accumulates). The player must start mitigating this radiation damage, or more and more animal species will all turn "mean" against the player, become toxic to eat, and eventually die.

Perhaps some of the species naturally filter and contain radiation. The player would have to determine which ones these are (with a geiger counter or something), and breed them around the ship.

Well what I think happened was something like the equivalent of a nuclear reactor exploded on the ship.

It won't be possible to clean it up for a long time unless future scifi technology lets it happen.

To power that ship probably required a lot of energy, and to provide that energy, a very powerful reactor. And thus more radiation.

Yeah, the intention is that you eventually will be able to clean up the radiation, or at least find a way to get past it.

I would probably go for the find a way past it thing. With like radiation suits or something.
Because if you clean up the radiation, there's no reason to keep radiation enemies in the game past that point.

However if you're just surviving in it via a hazmat suit.
You have to fight all the powerful radiation monsters.
