Is subnautica set in the same universe as NS2? No really, think about it. The sci-fi architecture looks quite similar, albeit shinier, but that is to be expected, as that was the military, and this appears to be more or less leisure based, with the crashed spaceship looking like something akin to a cruise ship.

The clothes also look like they would fit right into that universe, and the planets creatures follow the same realistic but also exotic style, in fact, some of them look very much like un-khaara versions of the aliens. There is also no reason lore wise for it not to be set in the same universe, as they probably just take place different places, or even at different times, hell, I would argue that setting it in the same universe would be a smart move, as that would allow for crossovers, deeper plot, and more exploration, both in this game and ns2.

A particularly odd idea that sprung to mind, which is almost certainly false, is that this takes place a while before ns2, and that the world of subnautica is the one that the khaara first infested. As noted above, many of the creatures and corals look strikingly similar, and if we look at the khaaras backstory, it says that they infest worlds, and then assimilate all life on them. It would make sense for the first planet the khaara infested to be an ocean world, seeing that their structures all look like sea life.

Is that maybe a wee bit crazy? Yeah, probably.
