Hi, I've tried to launch Natural Selection 2 many times but it always happen the same thing: I press "PLAY" on steam, the screen become completely black for 2 seconds, the game minimizes and returns to the desktop. If I click on the icon the screen becomes black again for 2 seconds and I can hear the sound of the menu, then it returns to the desktop. How can I solve? Thank you
Gerry

No, I didn't but I've already tried to verify the cache. I'm now trying to delete the files and download them again...However I saw that the icon on my desktop is white, with no image of the game, is it normal? Thank you for the reply :D

OK, the problem seems to stem from your sound device. Your output channel is working, but it has no record channel set-up. Because of this the sound is not initialising, and you log is filling up with errors.

I have an external audio interface, and I get similar messages when I forget to turn it on. Your device is on as it has an output set, but it cannot register an input channel, and thus is causing a Direct3D issue.

Check you record settings in windows, and make sure a device is set for record. That should fix the issue.

Thank you for the help! To record I'm using my webcam that I've just connected to the usb port. In audio recording settings it says that my webcam works and I'm using it to record. I've tried to launch the game but the issue persist..

Try setting it to your soundcard as recording device and see what happens. If it works, then you'll have to not use the webcam while playing ns2. If it doesn't then it will need further investigation.

In recording settings it is set as default device to record but the game still gives the same problem..

Does the log give the same error, or does it give new errors? What happens when you try to start a local server?

Have you followed the nuke post instructions found here? This will reset NS2 fully. Just remember to disable steam cloud sync first!

Hi, here is a thought. In your log.txt file you have
    Date: 04/05/14
    Time: 14:02:27:
    Build 264
    Windows 8 64-bit (build 9200)
    Steam initialized

    Direct3D 9 initialized: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 (9.18.13.3523)
    Error: SoundSystem::SetDevice - invalid ID
Sound Device: Altoparlanti (Realtek High Definition Audio) stereo
    Record Device: disabled

Main Menu Initialized at Version: 264

Error: Couldn't read pixel data for light probe
Error: Direct3DDevice::Unable to get render target data

    .....

It is weird that you can hear the sound since it seems as if NS cannot find the appropriate device to play the sound on. But that aside, it does seem as if it is your graphics driver that is the ghost in this case. Did you try to manually changing your D3D9 in system_options.xml to something else? I think the options you have are: D3D9, D3D11, and OpenGL.
