Hi.

When I attempt to start the game, the screen/window is black, it loads for about 10 seconds, and then it suddenly exits.

I'm using linux (linux mint 15).
I've tried starting steam with "LANG=en_US steam".
I've tried starting the game with the launch option "LC_ALL=en_US %command%".
I've tried running the game in windowed mode, and fullscreen-windowed (default), and various resolutions.
I've tried verifying the integrity of the game cache.
I've tried deleting the ~/.local/share/Steam/SteamApps/common/Natural Selection 2/core/shaders/ and ~/.local/share/Steam/SteamApps/common/Natural Selection 2/ns2/shaders/ folders.
I've tried deleting the ~/.local/share/Steam/userdata/NUMBER/4920 folder.
I've tried deleting the ~/.config/Natural Selection 2 folder.
I don't appear to be subscribed to any NS2 mods.

The contents of my ~/.config/Natural Selection 2/log.txt is:

I'm using the fglrx driver (13.6 beta I believe).

Just before the black screen game exits, the regular mouse cursor changes to the orange Natural Selection 2 cursor.
Edit: Also, the game gets to about 200MB in memory before it exits.
Edit-2: When I attempt to launch NS2 (using LANG=en_US steam), the terminal output is:

    Hi Rustytotem,

most of the times it helps if you start Steam through the Terminal and than start NS2. In this case every output will be shown in this Terminal and so you can see why the game is not loading I would guess because of missing libs :-).
  • MrOptionMrOption Join Date: 2013-09-01 Member: 187539Members, Reinforced - Shadow
    Same exact symptoms here. :(

Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit with the latest FGLRX.

When running steam from the terminal, I just get:
Setting breakpad minidump AppID = 4920
Steam_SetMinidumpSteamID: Caching Steam ID: 76561197962637473 [API loaded no]
warning: The VAD has been replaced by a hack pending a complete rewrite
    Segmentation fault (core dumped)
Game removed: AppID 4920 "Natural Selection 2", ProcID 5834

Nothing at all indicating the cause of the segfault.

I'm guessing the developer of the Linux port was using nvidia primarily?

So close and yet so far! :)

I'm ready to assist with any data gathering, troubleshooting, or experimentation. Let's get this working.

    Okay,

Is there any debug data that looks helpful in ~/.config/Natural Selection 2/log.txt @rustytotems looks clean but in case the rest of you have a slightly different problem it wont hurt to ask:)

Can any one else confirm that version fglrx 13.8 beta 2 works?

In other words, this is the "up to date" FGLRX that everyone using Ubuntu's current LTS will be using. By the way - Steam itself nags you rather aggressively to do this update.

It seems like 13.8 would be a downgrade? If so, do you have a suggested driver install method?

If it's not PPA or DEB based, I'm going to cook a test system to try it on, rather than risk letting AMD's installer make a massive mess of my regular system (again).

@MrOption, if steam is pushing that update there is no reason for us to pull it. At least not until I know that it fixes things.

Do you get anything in the ns2 log that looks handy? (~/.config/Natural Selection 2/log.txt)

Just trying to get as much data as I can about the crash.

Steam doesn't do the update itself, but it does give you warnings if you are not on the newest drivers available, and opens the control panel in Ubuntu used for installing the latest. Without knowing how Steam has implemented this warning, I can't know for sure, but I suspect that the "latest" fglrx could be different for different Ubuntu versions.

That said, what it does on the 12.04 LTS release should probably be of particular concern.

OK, this is interesting. While eating my lunch had a free minute - decided to try downgrading to 12.10 - which is, "sudo apt-get install fglrx-experimental-12" followed by a reboot.

Now the game launches. But that "upgrade your version" nag happens even as you launch the game. In fact, the steam dialog appearing messes up the game itself - as if there's some issue with the z-ordering of the steam "upgrade from fglrx-12 to fglrx-13" dialog, the game, and the rest of the desktop. When trying to agree to the "one time optimization" I ended up agreeing to the driver upgrade instead, which launched that Ubuntu "additional drivers" panel. I closed both and switched back.

The're s a yellow, 50%-ish alpha box on the pointer. So far, other than that, it's running. Unfortunately it's running at FPS<1. Still looking into why.

    Good to know.

    Thanks for trying it out.

Running at my native resolution (1920x1200) I can finally get a tiny fraction of my normal framerate by turning all settings down. Haven't narrowed to any particular one that's the issue yet. Even with everything cranked down, there's still also a noticeable lag between mouse input and rendering - 100-400ms? Enough to make the game unplayable.

You can see the full details of my system in the sysinfo above, but it's a Radeon HD 5870 and a quad i7 running 3.3Ghz; WinXP/Win7 is lagless and liquid smooth with all settings maxed.

Ah - should have mentioned from the beginning - the framerate is fine on the title screen. I only observe the slowdown when in-game.

Is there any news related to this? Is there a defect being tracked somewhere - any hope of a fix?

Max, knows about it but he has not yet posted a fix.

So, in my brief testing of things, before my wife made me reinstall windows on the living room machine, I saw some very odd looking behavior on fglrx.

Hopefully, good thing will happen, soon(tm).

Thanks, Confused. It's kind of heartbreaking that it doesn't work - I'm glad fglrx is on the radar. I hope it can be sorted out; if there's anything I can do to help, let me know.

Sorry to necro an old thread, but I was wondering if anybody got natural selection 2 to work on build 258 using fglrx. Using the stable catalyst version results in a black screen then exits like everybody else for me. When I updated it to the newest version from AMD website - 13.11 Beta (Oct. 25), all I get is a black screen that doesn't exit. I waited for 30 minutes and nothing happened...
I'm using AMD 7950 and running Xubuntu 13.10. I have never even seen the start menu for Natural Selection 2 under Linux.

I hope you can be forgiven. :) There are a lot of ATI users out there. :(

No love for me with any build I've yet tried, including that one.

Best I can tell you is that UWE know about it. Hopefully it should get fixed soon.

Getting the exact same thing, been off it for a bit, just re-downloaded and what not.

Gone to play it and starts then black screen, have to alt tab out to kill it. even left it half hour or so.

Running an 290x on beta 6, thought it might have been the card as the 290 is on its first driver release. Popped my old and trusted 5870 and it does the same !

Log output is the same as above!

I'm having the same problem. Just decided to install, and it freezes with a black screen trying to compile the first two shaders. AMD graphics, Xubuntu 13.10 64-bit.

    Wait for the 263 beta ;) :

Changes confirmed by uwe devs at twitter:
There are some Linux support fixes including out of memory on kernel 3.12, support for Mesa and a workaround for AMD drivers

Hello guys I am having similar problems with this game, latest build 263.

I will try to describe what I tried tgo do so far and results. First lets mention my system specs: AMD A10-5800 APU processor with integrated Radeon HD 7660 and 8 GB of RAM and running on Linux Mint 16.

First I tried to launch the game with default xserver-xorg-video-ati but it failed to render. Then I installed fglrx ver2.13.101 which is proposed by the system on the list of available stable drivers. This one did run the game however framerate was unacceptable even on the lowest setting (below 10 fps when started tutorial) but main screen looked not so bad (it was around 20-25 fps).

Then I tried installing latest stable fglrx 13.12 driver from amd offical page however DKMS part of installation failed and even the Cinnamon crashed after restart. After that I tried installing that driver from pre-compiled list of drivers for ubuntu as advised here:

    http://phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?91885-AMD-Catalyst-13-12-GPU-Driver-For-Linux-Released&p=382324#post382324

I tried installing both 13.125 and 13.350 versions of the driver and while both work well with Cinnamon both get me stuck at black screen after running NS2 from steam.

After that I reverted to fglrx 13.101 however now even this one can't get me in-game. The screen just blinks for a second and that's it.

    Errorlog says this:
    GetInstanceCount currently unimplemented
    Build 263
    Linux Mint 16 Petra x86_64
    Error: Couldn't locate Awesomium package

warning: The VAD has been replaced by a hack pending a complete rewrite
    Error: Couldn't load 'game_setup.xml'
Error: Attempting to set watchdog callback on NULL Lua state
    Segmentation fault

I am really starting to give up on this game... Could someone please help me with getting it running or is it a lost cause?

Edit: I can get in the game again with fglrx 13.101 driver (it must have been something temporary with Steam) or the fact that I removed shaders from cache affected it. However low framerate still remains a problem and makes this game unplayable for me.

Also tried running the games under xfce de, however no improvement in framerate occurs.

An APU is going to yield lower frame rates than an officially supported and required dedicated graphics card. This goes for almost any modern game sold on steam, as well (especially FPS)
Also, Linux will be using open gl renderer which as shown in the options is in beta and thus will still have issues, especially in regards to performance.
I really wish the steam store page clarified this for Linux users..

I understand that APUs peformance is less its GPU counterpart, however under Windows I played games way more demanding than this one on this APU - e.g. Planetside 2 on mid to high end graphics fared pretty good and was playable.. However out of my personal beliefs I'm never going back to Windows. :P And if by any chance I went back to Wins I would probably be playing some other FPS tbh.

I understand also that AMD has some really shitty drivers for linux, and as you mentioned open gl is in beta. And finally yes it would be good if steam made it clear that this game is playable only if you have Intel graphics (since according to other threads no-one with amd graphics managed to play this game on linux). Nonetheless this game seems to be fun, and I really hope that either devs or amd guys find a fix for this problem so I won't call for a refund and hope they will fix it eventually.

p.s. could someone please send me fglrx 13.8 beta 2? I can't find a genuine one on the web. I did find a file named like that but it contained another driver actually and that one crashed cinnamon.

That was a reasonable reply and I agree with your calls. :)
Just to warn you though, not much engine work is being currently done in regards to OpenGL, so while it may happen at some point, I would not personally hold my breath.
But work is still definitely being done for Linux, so sit tight for improvements in that area.
Also, fyi, the refund would have to come through steam if you went that route.

    Daz,

So the error you are getting is not a typical video card error it is a permissions type issue. Please check the permissions on the install folder and make sure that teh noted files exist( ~/.local/share/Steam/SteamApps/common/Natural Selection 2/ns2/ game_setup.xml )

I might also check the tutorial folder since it looks like you are running that as well. ~/.local/share/Steam/SteamApps/common/Natural Selection 2/tutorial

maybe verify local content via steam as well.

Also worth noting that last time i tested cinnamon it gave a 75% frame rate loss compared to teh likes of mate or gnome2d

Thanks for replying Confused however the errors you refer to occured only after switching from one fglrx driver to another (newer version) and then back to original one. And when I deleted created shaders from cache that particular problem went away.

As for DE I tried running it from xfce (I believe that DE is the least consuming for the system) and absolutely no improvement happened. So I think that DE is not the main issue in my case.

Good to here, Can you post a newer log then. Are you getting shader compilation issues?

Also good to know that cinnamon is just bad for me and not for the general public as well.
