Marine and/or alien.
Tried to search to see whether this had been brought up but the search button wasn't responding so...

Playing recently the word commander got me thinking about having ranks and how it was in combat.

Would anything be gained by adding a rank system into the main NS2 gameplay?

By ranking i mean private, sergeant etc...

It could be a system that carried from game to game or just the current game you were in.

It could possibly come with buffs but i know people can be very against them, so it may even just be a boasting point.

yay or nay

A rank system would be cool like a battle history. No need to a rpgish ranking system. By rank on me a number not a military rank. Like the player with the best win/lose ratio and the best kill/death ratio would be ranked number 1. You could see there rank ingame or something. And everyone would have a number based of each other. So your you just got the game your rank would be in the millions or something because you got to pass the others up stat wise. Ranking like halo 2 or something none of this unlock progression unbalanced ######.

I'm one of those people who isn't a fan of persistent 'buff' rewards. Giving extra advantages to experienced players over new ones seems like a sure fire way to piss off potential new customers. And even if the rewards only lasted for one game, one of the things that annoyed me about combat was that the superior team would often pull ahead of the 'losers' in upgrades and then spend the rest of the game crushing them over and over.

If it's just for bragging rights I guess that would be ok. As you can tell it doesn't interest me too much (like achievements) but commercially it could be a good idea. From what I can tell on gamer forums many, many people fall over themselves to get all the achievements in games.

Ok here this is what a ranking system should be. IT should be a ranking system.... nothing else. The player thats the best in the game (best w/l ratio and best k/d ratio) is number 1. Everyone falls accordingly. The cool stuff can be left for steam achievement system. Nothing should be inforced in the gameplay stuff tho. Halo 2 imo best ranking system ive ever seen in a real game. Could of been better tho.

As long as ranks apply to "sv_pure" servers, everything should be fine.

Still think what bungie did with Halo: Reach is one of the best systems to date.

Please don't turn NS2 into the next COD... arms upgrade, xp and all... yurk

Why does every FPS seems to need an xp system nowadays ? NS is a team-based game, if you do well your team will win, and not you will get a fancy gun ...

If it is just a rank, why not but how will you determine who "won", of course the commander did not score a lot of kills, but his role is however crucial.

I definitely see NO reason to incorporate xp/rank-based rewards and customizations - that sort of thing only encourages grinding mentality and elitism.
If a leaderboard/stattracker is put in the game at some point, I would very much like to see some ranks (maybe hidden ranks?) only to give a visual character progression, like the new Red Orchestra 2 will have - as you progress, your skin would change slightly to be a little more ragged, scarred and experienced looking (or at least you should be able to choose between unlocked skins, so not everyone end up being the same last skin) - this way, you will earn a little progression and newbies will have a visual indicator as to who to follow and learn from

    Just no!
This is the kind of thing that goes on behind close doors on normal game releases, where they are optimizing it right up until the end. You guys are just getting to play with a version of the game that normally only the developers see.

    Nay!

No potentially unbalancing reward system is required here. As said before, the essence of this game is a team shooter.

If they want to please pro_g4ym0rs they could drown them with loads of titles... like, "best door closer" or "most fade kills with a toothpick". All fine for me, as long it hast no influence on balance.

It is even better to act quickly and err, than to hesitate until the time of action is past.

Maybe a ranking system just to add a few more players into the game but don't add anything that is unbalanced.

Veteran players should only beat New players with skill.

    Not with weaponry.
Sig images should be no larger than 400x75px in size.

Ok here is a layout for a good rank system it looks at. W/L ratio and K/D ratio and W/L ratio as a commander and how you get that is. The longest person in com for that game gets the win/lose to there player stats. So you cant just jump in and get that stat.

As far as xp and unlock no i agree thats dumb and kills a game. But there is no reason why a good ranking system couldnt be inplaced into the game. Would be cool if each player at there stat page with detail info on them. This will have to come later after they finish the game but there is no point why this cant be done.

No rpgish needs to be added just a good o ranking system that well.. ranks you. You can see whos good or not.

Or one kinda cool element would be gorge hats when you get in the top 10000 ranks

but if you fall out of the top 10000 you lose the hat so gives you something to thrive for i guess lol. I want a cowboy hat.

In my experience, rank systems based on k/d ratio only encourage campy gameplay. Any ranking system for a game like NS should be based on points, which you'd get for building stuff, following orders and finishing objectives, as well as killing stuff (or half-killing stuff. Assist points are essential to any team based game).

true ok overall score would work better. do coms get score for being com? idk maybe score and w/l coms. Any hoo would be something cool to see where you stack vs other players like hey im rank 203452 and i suck! lol

I realize some people like ranking, but to force it in everyone's face through the GUI would probably discourage people who like playing support roles or casually etc when they don't have a 7346:1 kill ratio. I can also see this encouraging cheating for similar reasons. Let's not make this game feel like a global competition as it's often a turn off for the casual player.

That said I'm working on a stat tracking program that will do something similar (like hlstats). It will be server specific but could easily be setup to receive ranking information across multiple servers if desired. Either way I feel a global game-integrated ranking system would probably be a bad idea and should be left to specific servers if they choose to do so. When I get some more work done I'll be sharing with server ops in the near future hopefully sometime after the next patch.

Rank levels are fine for ns2 as long as you don't unlock anything that changes gameplay.

Like have a icon for levels of commander experience. Novice, Intermediate, Veteran.

Based on how many 5+ minute games completed rather than how well you play.

Yeah.. No.. It's just unnecessary, pointless and encourages a few especially unsavory types of players I've noticed.

We already have a scoreboard, and outside of that, what you did in the previous dozen games isn't going to matter in the current one you're in.
NS2 is a re-imagining, it'll likely never be the sequel some were looking for.

NS2c, The NS2 you may be looking for; sticking closer to it's roots.

    Thank you, modding community.

Support roles don't have good K/D ratios ever.

I'll agree that Bungie is the boss when providing ranking systems but I don't think it applies to the NS gameplay.

Maybe stat tracking like Dystopia which is all encompassing might be useful. They track some very creative stats.
    http://www.dystopia-stats.com/
(Click on someone and you can see their stats)
i used to check my certain stats for certain classes or certain days to see where I needed to practice more.

As far ranking like sergent lietenant etc. and whatever names for the alien team.

I think these would be more valuable assigned and removed by the commander

That way when JoBlow says "Run in there and sacrifice your life"
if he is a lieutenant...it has more gravitas.

ranks in general should be a post release feature...in my opinion.

Ranks could be just based off of how many points you have, another way to indicate what your score is, and they could reset at the end of the round.

Just keep it simple, no billions of different forms of private or corporal.

We should get sponsor emblems. In the crappy direction things are going, I think military/security/whatever organizations will be funded and sponsored through advertisements. I want a bright emblem showing off my favorite future beer on my back.

yeah no this would be terrible.

It's a team game, individual performance overall is irrelevant. Also sounds way too much like combat.

    No thanks.

I say instead of rankings per say, at the end of each round the game should distribute automatically title rewards to each players, good or bad, just for fun, like in Timesplitters Future Perfect, which would be a good example:

    things like:
    ''most accurate''
    ''most damaging''
    ''pacifist''
    ''most sneaky''
    ''most frantic''
    ''suicidal bomber''
    ''most outgunned''
    "spur crazy"
    ''most manic''
    ''hypochondriac''
    ''most combustible''
    ''most lazy''
    ''lead sponge''
    ''worst shot''
    ''most suicidal''
    ''survivor''
    "glass jaw"
    ''lucky shot''
    ''best equipped''
    ''head surgeon''
    ''nut putter''
    ''butcher''
    ''CQC expert''
    ''sniper''
    ''brawler''
    ''most greedy''
    "most resourceful"
    "pistolero"
    "fireman"
    "most chaotic"
    "most professional"
    "goat puncher"

    etc etc....

I think it would be fun, and it would glorify you either ways and kind of tell you how you did.

Savage does it, but what winds up happening is the better players get promoted faster and get an even larger advantage over those who don't know how to play.

    *Edit*
Vladamir, Savage has a similar end game reward system which I do find amusing. That wouldn't be so bad but I don't think it's worth dev time at this point.
