Menu music <3
Haven't seen it mentioned in a dedicated topic so I thought I'd take the time to shout out mad props to the guy who composed the music on the menu screen because it is mesmerisingly amazing.

Don't you all agree?

Yes it's somehow very fresh air in the scifi theme and it really fits into NS.

I'm too used to thinking of Jeremy Soule's music as the main theme for NS, maybe in time...

What I like most about it is how it is noticeably good, but not in-your-face. Basically it's saying "Yeah, I'm awesome music that could be in any AAA game but I'm understated because this game is going to be that good."

It's not an easy balance to achieve, but we do want to make a game that will be both the best competitive game since Starcraft and also one that many people can enjoy casually without being in a clan or an experienced or knowledgeable NS player. That's the goal at least!

My first thought was "This doesn't sound like NS at all."
Technically it's not bad just not what I expected, maybe it'll grow on me.

I love it and absolutely can't wait to hear more. Thal said it best, feels quite unique.

I like it as well, for all the reasons already stated by others here.

I actually couldn't agree more with this. The music fits so incredibly well, the operatic singing mixed with the dark nature of the game and what we've come to expect from natural selection is amazing. A huge factor that a lot of "indie" game developers overlook is actually the music (not that UWE are technically indie anymore, the quality of work produced shows as much) which plays such an incredibly vital role in setting the scene for the games tone.

Whoever composed that piece or decided that the style of song suited natural selection deserves a bonus.

i just posted it into another Thread but it seems to fit more in here then there...

    Game Sounds:

i found this little program http://jerome.jouvie.free.fr/Fmod/Projects...t1.php#Download to open the .fsb files(i downloaded the stable version), open the programm richtclik into the empty space and open - folder etc in your ns2 sound library.

with rightclick you are able to convert the files in .wav (sounds a lot better in other players as wav)

Some sounds are damaged or at least i think they shouldn't sound like they are... But try yourself.

buildbot: "Yes, I hovered without flapping"
buildbot: "you are subservient to machines"

    The others sound like placeholders.

When Dragon Age came out, I wrote a little program to open the .FSB files its resources were saved as. I was quite surprised to see Natural Selection use this format as well, but also that my app opens them without any issues.
There is only one problem, my app doesn't add any WAVE header, as they were already in the Dragon Age resources, whereas the Natural Selection files are raw wave data. This would be an easy to add though.

Here is the original thread, if anyone is interested:

And here is the "Dragon Age Extractor" download:

That link seems borked, so try this one http://jerome.jouvie.free.fr/Fmod/Projects...?evolution=true.

Listened to them all, and some of them definitely sound damaged/corrupted.

It sounds very forlorn. I tried to find a way to extract it from the files, but I've had no luck. How about you guys give out the soundtrack as a preorder bonus?

As it looks it will be available anyways, like the tools. Though i would not mind buying the soundtrack seperately.

I've updated my FSB Extractor app, should work a little better now at extracting the files inside the FSB archives.
There are still some problems with the FSOUND_MPEGHALFRATE files though.
I realise that there are already other programs available for doing this, but they are all command line tools.

Yes, David John is creating the soundtrack. However, the game won't have much in the way of straight up music in it. We'll have the main menu track and maybe some victory/loss/credits music, but having music play in-game in a multiplayer FPS never works well. Players are more interested in the environment around them. We are planning on having some small bits of dynamic music in-game though, triggered when important events happen ("stingers").

In order to create these stingers consistently, we thought it best to create a regular game soundtrack (but which won't be used in the game per se). This establishes consistent themes, instrumentation, feel, etc. for the player classes. Then we can extract bits to use as the dynamic stingers to play at appropriate times. We will also release the full soundtrack for sale as well.

Do you mean you will or will not have background ambient type sound tracks/loops? (aka white noise)
something to be played at low volume?

I guess I'm not understanding what you saying you will be releasing.

Are "stingers" something like the music that play in Left 4 Dead when a Tank is coming or a Witch is near/startled?

That is probably the best USE of Music I've ever noticed in a video game. Also thanks for posting on youtube, I have not gotten the Engine Test yet :/

[EDIT: forgot to mention that I love the cameos on the NS2 menu video]
