Yeah, pistol mechanism makes it look like it'll fire slower instead of faster.

Axe IS different but DAMN is that not awesome, I've never thought of a switch axe or thought it was possible. You guys did it and it looks AWESOME!.

Great pistol. Great axe. I like the curved axe and the non-curved axe. Possibly the curved idea is a bit better.

Either way it's all awesome! :>

The only critism I can make at this point is about the Axe. IMO, the Axe handle is far too long and the blade is too small as well. I also don't believe it says "Pedal Faster Jiggly!" quite like the knife did. More spikey things on it would resolve this problem.

Seriously though, I think it needs to have more of a presence. IMHO, it needs to say "%#$ You Aliens! Run or die!" regardless of whether or not it can actually live up to its words. The sheer site of four marines rushing down a tight corridor with their Axes out has to scare someone. Right now, I think it just looks oddly disporportioned* and humorous.

*As in, the Axe-blade would need to be bigger or the shaft would need to be smaller to make it look right..

Also: Who is Alterra? A new arms company in the NS universe, or have I just not heard of them before?

I think the gun and the axe look fantastic. I do have to admit that the modifications zex and Cruor made to the weapons do make them look even better IMO. Either way they look great.

    Yes!
It's about time, that the Marines got something better than the Knife.
Hopefully it get's about as strong as the 08-15 Skulkbite-Attack.

Not big on the weird lever that protrudes out of the pistol after a shot.

Both the axe and pistol do have the "chunky" feel of ns.

For everyone confused with the axe look... it looks pretty solid to me. The only difference is that it seems to have both a sharpened outer edge, and a scythe-like sharpened under edge. Makes sense to me, for a combative, tool-ish type of melee weapon.

Well I reckon both look pretty sweet.

2.Sec-Ax for Both Hands would rock my socks off

I think they look great, possibly both could do with some extra fine tuning like pistol muzzle vents and the axe curvature.

However I'm more concerned about what its going to be used for in game. I figure from reading its even more discouraged to attack an alien with melee because of the 2 sec deployment. However it was also suggested that it would do more damage than the original knife. Does this mean that its basically designed to hack the crap out of alien structures? Or is it for clearing vents or something to do with DI (if DI is still in).

I'm not sure how I feel about the left hand there in the FP-shot of the axe. I mean, I'd hold my hand out if I was holding still or about to hit something, but holding your hand right there as you were just running down hallways seems silly to me.

You tend to use a curved blade to make up for a lack of sharpness. If your axe isn't sharp enough, then the curve focuses the force being applied. However, a curved edge means that the axe isn't as useful for very quick cuts through wider things like shipping crate boards or cables. The flat blade can come down evenly on a ship hull surface, cutting through the full width of a larger cable in one shot. As an emergency tool, that's what you want. The more you have to chop, the longer it takes. And when it comes to sharpness, well.. we have nanites keeping this think sharp like a ceramic blade.

The straight bladed axe also has that small flat section that protrudes on the bottom of the blade, so you can use it to pry. With the curved blade as shown coming down to a point, prying with any significant force would be much more difficult. Since this isn't just a Kharaa fighting tool but an emergency tool more versatility like that makes sense.

As for the slits in the axe.. take a look at a cheese knife. They often have holes in them or at least dimples because it keeps the blade from getting completely stuck if you've gone in deep into something soft -- something like, say, Kharaa flesh. And again, the nanites keeping it super sharp lessens the necessity of it having to be weighty to do damage.

I dunno how many "Last of the Mohicans" style movies you haven't seen, but tomahawks are far more threatening to me than any spikey World of Warcraft junk. :P

Anyone notice that, even though Gerber says it's an axe, that it seems more like a hatchet at best. Being able to throw it like a tomahawk would be cool, but i think it would be tiring to try to chop a rt with that little blade.

Why not a way to put a few wraps of det cord to cut the rt down?

Or make the "axe" rocket powered for assisted deep cuts in just about anything :P

In terms of what is practical, a little chainsaw would of been the most believable way for slicing through a few feet of fleshy bony rt.

    --------------------------------------

Damn the onos can't devour... would of been fun hacking away at his internal organs to cut an exit! lol

    --------------------------------------

Ok... i think i know why the devs designed the pistol the way they did. If you think of what you see in the first person perspective, when holding a pistol, it's like the majority of the details are hidden away and the top half is very basically shaped. The devs wanted to add a lot of details to that very visible area, and that's why i believe they choose the toggle-lock action. I think, still using that action, that the pistol could of had more visibly moving parts then it currently does, and more detail added to the iron sights (make them bigger, and glowing different colors as if powered by the same electronics for the ammo readout, where the sights and the digital display would turn a shade of red when ammo is low), but whatever this will work.

    +1 on cruor's axe suggestion

    Anyway, what's up with Alterra?
Is this one of your sponsors or one of those evil future companies that took over the whole market?

The pistol reminds me of the one that Science and Industry had somehow.

I always tend to appreciate the gameplay details over the backstory, but I guess having two weapons makes up for the lack of gameplay details. Some video of the weapons in action would be awesome.

I like em (not sure the viewing angle in game makes the pistol look as bad ass as it is but then maybe the draw animation will show it off a bit).

Not sure about the two handed grip on the pistol handle, with no moving parts on the underside of the barrel might it make more sense to fire it there? Although not if it has major recoil I guess.

I like the axe, although yeah the straight blade is a little odd, though it'd probably work better for cutting cables, and we're not chopping wood here.

Oh man i hope i am one of these ^^

    @News
Anyway great news, i love how you do some "own" and not copy like all the other games, i love you use the tiny axe instead of a knife.
And the look of your pistol, all is very unique.

    hey all!

great job on both! in fact thats the pistol i like most of them...and the axe looks really nice! 2 sec is fair i think and it was time for it...damn...i cut a hive with a knife!? LOL give me an axe ;) thats right! keep it up that way!
maybe you add a burst mod to pistol... that could made those nerds not script it and cheat it :D so let them chose single or dribleshot on pistol pls

I've just got a few comments. First off, I like my pistol to feel like a Hand Cannon. Like the magnum on Halo, it felt really awesome to shoot it because it was really powerful, and loud. (Side Note: I liked concept #6 the most.) Secondly, I don't understand the reasoning behind an axe, why not just have a really big knife? Then I can just stab one of the aliens in the face, instead of chopping at it.

On another note, knife or axe, it would be cool if you could do some really intricate melee animation if, say you managed to get behind one of the Kahraa. Like a marine jumping up on it's back, and hacking at it's head while it flails around, and the marine holding on to it as if it were a bucking bull.

Also another side note: Anything I didn't talk about as bad, I considered it to be pretty awesome.

I like the Axe, its cool. Still not 100% sure on the pistol but until I can see in game anim's I don't think I can pull a proper conclusion, its unsual and in screenshots looks odd to me but if its pulled off in game then its allll good :)

Cool stuff. I like the axe.

Seeing 2 marines chopping away at a res while another covers will look WAY better than marines with butter knives sawing away at it for days.
  • ZunderZunder Join Date: 2009-12-13 Member: 69631Members
This Axe is a really great idea imo; we can feel that's a more powerfull melee weapon against an armored skulk than the old CS style knife.

I love the pistol, the look is awesome; can't wait to had this baby in hands :D
  • NamronNamron Join Date: 2002-11-29 Member: 10220Members
For chopping res towers, the axe makes sense. It always looked silly when marines cut res towers to death with their knifes.

I read on Wikipedia that axes (tomahawks) are used by the US military today: "According to military After action Reports, apart from use as a CQB weapon, the tomahawk's modern use includes non-explosive dynamic entry, obstacle removal, lock/hasp removal, opening crates, ventilating fuel drums, digging fighting positions, personal defense, and IED removal."

That the NS axe is obviously a rip-off of that Gerber axe is embarrassing though. Oh, and it looks nicer with curvature.

I like the axe idea, it makes alot of sense.
I am concerned with the pistols luger mechanism as it seems a little bit of a step back than forward. For a compact weapon, having something like that which is a threat to marine fingers in such an exposed way you would think such designs would be avoided, especially in combat situations where your focus should be on your target and not where you fingers may be sitting.
  • iKossuiKossu Join Date: 2002-12-30 Member: 11593Members
I really like the Space Luger! What it comes to the great axe debate, the curved one is better because it'd cut & chop better in real life. One more thing: the axe has to look kinda weak because marines don't actually want to do hand to hand fighting with extraterrestials.
  • lwflwf Join Date: 2006-11-03 Member: 58311Members, Constellation
It looks great. An axe rather than a knife does make sense.
There's only one problem; now we are going to need a "timber!"-taunt for when chopping down resource towers. ;)
