how did you guys solve the turret room in the last advanced level?

<span style='color:#000000;background:#000000'>it sounds like a lot of people threw stuff through portals to knock the turrets over. Meanwhile I portaled to a tiny ledge in the back-left corner of the room and then made a flying dive into the room with the cube</span><!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

<span style='color:#000000;background:#000000'> Portal yourself onto that farleft wall pushed out, and jump off back to the main platform to portalfing into the sentries one at a time. It works, but takes a bit of positioning to not overshoot the cute things and fly off into the goo. After that, it's pretty straightforward.</span>

<span style='color:#000000;background:#000000'>Its also possible to beat that section WITHOUT killing the sentries, its just a tad more fun/difficult
Throw a portal on one of the side walls, not quite at the top of the usable area, about halfway to the far side. make a companion portal on a handy wall, peek through, if you can see the good wall section in the button alcove, creep forward through the portals until you can portal that wall bit. If you can't see the wall, adjust the exit portal. When you actually place the next portal bit, backpedal HARD before it forms or you will be goo'd. From there, carry on as normal, being careful in the places where a sentry can see you (especially the crate alcove).</span>

Toothy is indeed full of hacks. He and I both came up with different 3 portal solutions, and by combining them both he got it down to just 2 portals. I think its the same solution the people at HL2.net forums had, but just in case you are curious:

<span style='color:#000000;background:#000000'>My solution had you use two portals in the first room to get the box, then shoot a third from the first room into the second room. You position your 3rd portal directly above the higher button in that room. Fall into it with your box, and then use the box to deflect the energy ball into the receptacle. Leave the box on the button and then jump down to the (still closed) exit door. From here you jump onto the support pole for the moving platform (do this while the platform is on the other side). Wait for the box and platform to approach you, grab the box and then jump back to the lower button and then exit through the door.

Toothy found you can grab the box in Room 1 by jumping from the button and randomly mashing +use. So he did that, then used the box on top of the button to place an exit portal on the wall in Room 2 instead of the ceiling. I'm a bit hazy on the details here, but he managed to get the box onto one button while standing on the other, shot a portal into the exit room and got out that way.

When he heard my 3 portal solution he grabbed the box using his previously mentioned hax, and then followed the path I used to complete the puzzle in 2 portals.</span>

When I had to run around in front of them I carried a cube and crouched so their shots would just hit the cube. I was killed by the companion ball <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/confused-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="???" border="0" alt="confused-fix.gif" />

<span style='color:#000000;background:#000000'> I tried to kill the rocket turret for 10 min before I realised how to go on, I sent rocket at its back, front, top, I even sent rocket just as near as possible to kill it with splash damage.</span>

At a advanced map, the one with a powerball shooter, with the receiver right next to it and angled surfaces at the other side of the room (portal killing field in middle) how do you solve it? I just shot portals randomly on the angled walls until the ball hit the receiver by dumb luck. It was the only real problem I had, the stupid ball sometimes went straight out of the portal, sometimes at an angle.

Also, on challenges, do you jump when you really need to take steps or do you walk normally?

Last note: Evil EVIL 3VIL! game.

Wow, this game rocks so hard.

It's my favorite game ever at the moment. It's just so beautiful and everything is so nicely done. Simple and elegant...

I would buy a sequel to Portal in an instant.

Seriously, best game I have played in a while.
You guys managed to make a game with two very memorable characters (the sentries and gladis.. however you spell it)

The sentries were so awesome and I actually knocked over the broken sentry before realizing it was broken and spent about 5 minutes trying to stand it back up since it was nice and didn't shoot me. I felt bad knocking the sentries over.

The pipe with the box I did with two chairs and a computer, I only realized how to do it properly using the commentary.
I am surprised by the thought that went into so much of the level design, and it is incredibly effective and most of it is just completely subconscious stuff.

I hated having to destroy that companion box thing... That was great, the computer kept talking about it and we had to use it for the entire level and it protected us while we carried it around, it made it all have a lot of attachment. At the end when the computer said it invited my companion box but he couldn't come because I killed him I got so pissed. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

To say the least, I am impressed.

lol @ the chair and computer stacking <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" /> It took me a few minutes to figure out what to do, too, but I kept saying to myself "Think with portals, think with portals!!!!" ^^ Poor GlaDOS though... he/she/it let me no other choice <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" /> I liked him/her/it!

if people have figured out how to play HL2 maps in Portal, I wonder how hard it would be to enable multiplayer in Portal? even if it's not fully implemented, it would be a fun sandbox, co-oping levels or trying to portal someone else into a slime pit...

I was looking into the minds behind Portal and I saw this Erik Wolpaw guy was a writer for Portal and for Psychonauts. Goes to show you how awesome writing can really make a good game perfect. I never knew about his website when it was around in the early 00's but I'm reading it now and it's pure gold, and you can clearly see the writing style exactly matches a lot of what comes out of GlaDOS' robot lips, not to mention Psychonauts...

quality writers (and translators) = unsung heroes of the gaming industry =p

I <i>finally</i> got to play Portal today. It was worth the wait, $20 game price, and $30 price for new graphics card. What can I say that hasn't already been said? Astoundingly brilliant, and not long enough. Thankfully theres an SDK, so we'll get a bunch of extra levels to pay with. On the whole, I thought the ones in the main game were a little easy, and the advanced ones merely tricky. If you've ever played all 50 levels of the latest release of Kiki the Nanobot (another mind bending puzzle game, highly recommended) then you know the kind of difficulty I'm looking to get out of custom maps (difficult in problem solving, not speed or accuracy. Regal in Kiki had me scratching my head for hours).

And now, for your enjoyment, a list of some of my favorite GlaDOS quotes:
<span style='color:#000000;background:#000000'>"Well done, android. The Enrichment Center once again reminds you that android hell is a real place where you will be sent at the first sign of defiance."</span>
(Red Dwarf fans will probably find more humor in this than others)

<span style='color:#000000;background:#000000'>"Remember when the platform was sliding into the fire pit and I said 'Goodbye' and you were like 'NO WAY' and then I was all 'We pretended we were going to murder you'? That was great!"</span>
I was in stitches after this one. I laughed so hard I had to take a minute to catch my breath. It was the only time I stopped playing for any reason.

    <span style='color:#000000;background:#000000'>
"The effects of prolonged exposure to the button are not part of this test"
"Warning devices are required on all mobile equipment. However, alarms and flashing hazard lights have been found to agitate the High Energy Pellet, and have therefore been disabled for your safety."
"That thing you broke isn't important to me. Not any more. It's the Fluid Catalytic Cracking Unit; it makes shoes for orphans. Nice job breaking it, hero."
"Have I lied to you? I mean, in this room? Trust me."
"The Companion Cube cannot remain through the testing. State and local statutory regulations prohibit it from simply remaining here, alone and companionless. You must euthanize it."

Speaking of the Companion Cube, the developer commentary explaination for its existence was that when it was a non-descript cube players would leave it behind and interpret the halway as a timing puzzle, instead of using the cube to block the Aperture Science High Energy Pellets which would hint at the solution to the puzzle later in the room. I find this very odd, since you can just hug the sides of the hallways and remain completely safe from the Aperture Science High Energy Pellets.
