On a completely unrelated note, should I watch the Melancholy of Haruhi anime? I read the book (or "light novel" I suppose) previews and was hooked, already got the books, but I still hesitate. Haven't really watched any anime before.
Apparently it's officially on YouTube, so I don't even have to do anything dubiously legal.

I'm reading through the manga right now. It's pretty cool.

I didn't 100% get why Haruhi the anime was so beloved. Mostly I'm guessing due to fanboys going "omg I'd love to have Haruhi in mah life!" plus it was fairly pretty.

I enjoyed it, but it doesn't make my OMG MUST SHARE WITH WORLD list.

Why do the word "K-ON!" come into my head when I see the pictures of the characters?

I also have a rule of thumb to not watch "cute" animes which all tend to be effing boring unless you can relate to your inner child.

In other news I've just finished watching Occult Academy and it was pretty decent in my opinion. Fun to listen in on Japanese mythical creatures and demons.

It's the only ongoing anime I like uncontrollably much. My feelings take a dent if I don't get to watch it at the end of each week.

I've been travelling a lot lately so I've been going through the older non-HD anime I have as it's the only thing my tiny little travel PC can handle :p

Recently finished Zettai Shounen which was strange but enjoyable and I'm currently working through Eureka 7 which I'm enjoying more than I expected to :3

edit: actually, let's make this post a bit more constructive/useful...

I've been thinking; I like anime and like giving my money to people who make it but I'm getting really tired of having countless DVDs clogging up my house and having to wait for DVD releases. I moaned that what we really need is something like a steam for anime and someone pointed out iTunes does anime, which surprised me. I had a look and sure enough they have stuff like angelic layer, ghost hunt and even gankutsuo (one of my favest animes ever)

So... I was wondering. What's the closest thing to a complete 'steam for anime' out there? I now know itunes does anime and apparently amazon has some kind of 'amazon unboxed' thing going (though I note they have less anime). What's the best digital anime distribution system that people know that allows me to give monies to the people who make stuff I like? The less horrible protection stuff on it the better too as I hate to think 2 PCs down the line I won't be able to watch them or whatever.

Do... do they have Slayers with subtitles?

I don't have itunes myself so I can't check but I'll admit I didn't seem to be able to find it by using search on the apple website (most of the entries are songs. It's possible the anime is in there as they don't come out top in most of the searches I've done but I can't see beyond the first 6 or so search results without itunes and there's a loooot of songs with 'slayers' in the name :/ ).

I didn't think to query if they were subtitled or not, I just assume these days that everything will have a japanese option with english subtitles so that's a good question :o

Maybe you could just ask Valve to put anime on Steam? They might actually do it.

I was pleasantly surprised with Eureka 7 too. It's got enough yay mechs and yet mixes in a decent amount of character growth and non-1D supporting cast.

Also, childish blind love is cute.

Ending goes a little wack though...

uh-huh, the ending is a bit all over the place and I wasn't feeling the main villain's motives (nor is his final play explained in a manner I find particularly satisfying). I don't understand the half/half thing either or the whole 'limit'. That aside, I like it for the reasons you mentioned; good characters and it's just oddly watchable in general :3

I'm now on to Beck which I have mixed feelings about. The animation is bad (it surprised me that madhouse was doing this as they're usually pretty good) and where japanese VA doing bad english voice acting usually amuses me (e.g. black lagoon) it actually irks me in Beck. Those two complaints aside it's actually a good series though, so far, but the two points I mentioned do bring it down for me and I did consider stopping at one or two points.

Once Beck's out of the way I'll probably go back to trying to finish Soul Eater. I loved it, but had difficulty finding all of it so I had to stop, but I've go the whole series now and I've been meaning to catch up where I left off :3

does this count as live action anime, I mean anime chars are obviously mostly Caucasian and japanese version of this one would be what? Live action anime?

Speaking of live action... I think this one is pretty cool. GTO Live Action even if the main char is not blond IRL...

There's been a number of studies on the subject, and most suggest that it's all in the eye of the beholder.

They don't look any more particularly cacausion to me either. There's a famous japanese director who looks a bit like spike actually, except he's got an afro :p

BECK I thought works out if you make it through it. Yeah sometimes they rely on the music and give way to crappy animation when they're singing, but it tends to get better, the music is pretty awesome, and the characters mostly believable. And yay some really awesome heartwarming moments.

Then again, they do some weird serendipitous ###### that made me jerk out of my suspension of disbelief, but I finished it and I still would recommend it to others.

Moral of the story: they make people who are actually white noticeably white.
